!!WARNING!! Some people have posted on Howardforums.com that they have fried their phone using PST so USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I CAN NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF YOU FRY YOUR PHONE AS A RESULT OF USING PST/EMS MANAGER!!

This is how to ADD ring tones and graphics to your T720/T730...

First you must prepare your files....

Graphics must be no greater than 120x160 resolution GIF87 or GIF89a files. While the phone is listed as  supporting 4,096 colors, GIF is limited to 256 colors.

Ring tones.... According to the Compatibilty Guide on the Yamaha SMAF Global Website, the Motorola T720 (CMDA) supports the Yamaha mobile audio synthesizer LSI "MA-3".  The T730 (CDMA), while not listed, appears to also support this. HOWEVER the T720 GSM is NOT listed on that site under MA-1, MA-2 or MA-3.  While ALL the MIDI and iMelody ring tones that work on my T730 CDMA work on a friend's AT&T Wireless T720 GSM,  the voice ringers DO NOT.  I am told this is because the T720/T730 CDMA phone uses a Qualcom chipset and the T720 GSM does not. So the GSM model is not capable of "voice" style ringers.

For MIDI files as ring tones, Per the SMAF docs, "Please use Standard MIDI File Format 0" and "Midi channels from 1 to 16 can be used."

iMelody ringers can be used on the T720/T730 too.  As far as I know, when it comes to iMelody, there is a "iMelody Standard" that must be followed... I could not find iMelody ringers for download anywhere, so I made my own from Nokia RTLL formatted ringers I found on the internet...  I used the Motorola Messaging Suite v1.1.  It has a ring tone creator/editor that also can import a Nokia RTLL ring tone from a text file and saves the ringers as an iMelody format file. Its available from the Motorola MOTOCODER website. You must sign up, but download is free.  It will also show you if your iMelody is TOO long for your particular phone. and where you need to start chopping it to make it short enough for your phone.  To use the iMelody files created by Motorola Messaging Suite with EMS Manager, you need to rename the file from .IME to .IMY in order to add them to your EMS file.  On carriers like AT&T Wireless who have not disabled EMS/MMS messaging, the iMelody ringers can be sent as an SMS message to the phone rather than loading via PST and EMS Manager.  However, for Verizon users, you must load via data cable and software on the PC or purchase ringers from Get It Now.   See HERE for how I sent iMelody ringers via SMS message to my AT&T Wireless v60i (TDMA).

For "voice" style ring tones from WAV or MP3 files... Wav/MP3s to be converted into Ring Tones must be MONO, 16bit Audio Sample Size, and 4 or 8kHz Sample Rate or else the conversion will not work. You will also need the WSC-MA2-SMF tool to convert from WAV/MP3 to an MMF file suitable for loading on the phone. The tool is available from the Tools link from the Yamaha Global site.  .MMF files must be renamed to .MID if you are going to use them with EMS Manager.    See HERE for details on how to convert WAV or MP3 to .MMF.

Now the process....

Install and configure the appropriate drivers for your data cable on your PC. Next install PST and EMS Manager onto your PC.

If you have no custom ring tones or graphics on your phone yet, you need at least ONE. To add a custom ringer, on the phone go to MENU -> MEDIA CENTER -> MY TONES. Highlight NEW TONE and press the "select" button. For NOTES: key in something, it can be anything, as long as there is something there. Then name it, again anything you want. Later, after you have created an M-Services Backup file, you can go back into media center and delete this home made ringer.

the following is based on the instructions found HERE but with additional details.

PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! the following is based on the instructions found HERE but with additional details.

Once all your drivers and software are installed, connect your phone via data cable to the computer.

Create an M-Services Backup (.EMS) file.
Run PST. Click FILE -> NEW -> M-Services Backup File. When you see the "Untitled M-Services Backup" window, click PHONE -> READ. Once the reading is complete, go to FILE -> SAVE AS.. give it a name and remember where you put it. It will automatically get a .EMS extension.   You can exit PST for now if you wish, or leave it open.

Add your Ring Tones and Graphics to your M-Services Backup (.EMS) file.
Run EMS Manager. Click FILE -> OPEN and open your newly created M-Service Backup File (your .EMS) file. It should contain any custom ring tones or graphics currently loaded on your phone.
If you had to create a cutom ringer on the phone earlier, you should see it listed in EMS and can select it and click REMOVE. You can also delete it from MEDIA CENTER on the phone where you created it before.  Note: On a Verizon T730 (CDMA), only the custom ring tones/graphics were listed in the M-Services Backup file.  However, when reading the M-Services Backup data from an AT&T Wireless T720(GSM), PST read ALL ringers in the phone into the M-Services Backup file, NOT JUST THE CUSTOM ones. i.e. the Built In Ring Tones were also listed in the .EMS file.   Leaving those built in ringers in your .EMS file may provide unpredictable results, so if this happens for you, you may want to remove these ringers from the EMS file before adding your custom ones. Click the ADD button to add your Ring Tones and/or Graphics.  To get all of your files in, you might have to click the ADD button a few times, selecting only 3 to 5 file names per time. i.e. If you select about 10 files to add, EMS Manager gives an error about too many files and doesn't add them, however, selecting about 5 files at a time works, then click ADD button again, and select more files.  Continue doing this until you have added all of your files.  When you are finished, click UPDATE EMS.  From the dialog box saying "To you want to reset the PST Protection for this file...." click YES. You can exit EMS Manager now.

Load the updated M-Services Backup (.EMS) file.
Go back into PST. This time do FILE -> OPEN -> M-Service Backup and open your .EMS file. Click PHONE -> Write. It may take some time, but when it is COMPLETE, you can close PST.

You're done.  You should now see the ring tones and graphics in the phone under Media Center.  And the ringers should be available for you when setting the Ring Style's details.

Note: There are times that a PST operation may fail. When that happens, the phone will be stuck in a "suspend" state and appear to be dead. To recover, go into PST and click PHONE -> RESTART (If the PHONE pull down menu is not there, do a FILE->NEW and pick anything first). I have also been told that disconnecting the phone and removing its battery for about a minute also works.
